Inlays & Onlays

Smiling patient receiving exam with dental mirrorHere at Enamel General and Cosmetic Dentistry, we use inlays and onlays to fill up tooth cavities. Our implants are strong and durable and will leave your tooth functioning normally.

Inlays and onlays are modeled solid prosthetic implants that are used to fill up tooth cavities. They are used to fill cavities after tooth decay has been removed, and a cavity left behind. Inlays are used when the cavity to be filled is small, and the cusps of the tooth are still intact. Onlays are used when the tooth has been damaged beyond the cusps. The onlay has to be modeled with a top that looks like an ordinary tooth surface.

Inlays and onlays are used on premolars and molars. These are the teeth that are normally affected by tooth decay. The tooth has to be properly cleaned and disinfected first before the inlay or onlay is cemented in place.

Inlay and Onlay Placement

Our dentist will recommend an inlay or onlay if you have tooth decay or your tooth has developed a cavity after an accident. The dentist will remove the decay, disinfect the tooth, and properly shape the cavity in preparation for an inlay or onlay.

If the tooth has been fractured or chipped as a result of trauma, we will trim it and shape to remove the chippings and fractures. Most fractured or chipped teeth have a damaged cusp. They, therefore, require an onlay. A cavity will then be drilled on the tooth where the onlay will be inserted.

An impression of the cavity is then taken, and an inlay or onlay is modeled for it. An impression of the same tooth on the other side of the jaw is taken so that the onlay can be modeled with a surface just like that of the damaged tooth.

Inlays and onlays are made from silver, gold, porcelain, or ceramic. The material will depend largely on how much you are willing to spend. When ready, the implants are cemented permanently into the cavities. The process might take two or three appointments with our dentist. As you wait for the permanent inlay or onlay to be completed, our dentist will place a temporary implant into the cavity.

Why Opt for an Inlay or Onlay?

If your tooth is still strongly rooted, there is no need for a tooth extraction. The cavity left can be filled with an inlay or onlay. The tooth becomes stronger, and still functions as an ordinary tooth. An inlay or onlay is the simplest solution for a tooth that is in that condition. It is quite effective as far as restoring the tooth is concerned.

Inlays and onlays are inexpensive solutions for tooth cavities as well. They do not cost much when you opt for ceramic implants. Some materials such as gold might cost more.
