Dental Crowns
Newport Beach, CA

Diagram of dental crowns with varying placement at Enamel General and Cosmetic Dentistry in Newport Beach, Ca 92660<br title='b11'>A dental crown, sometimes known as a "cap" in layman terms, is a covering that is placed on top of your teeth. It is used as part of a simple cosmetic procedure that aims to encase teeth with large cavities, protect weakened teeth from further damage, improve aesthetics of chipped teeth, or serve as an alternative for teeth whitening procedures. Enamel General and Cosmetic Dentistry specializes in providing expertly crafted prosthetics, and our staff is trained to carry out the process swiftly.

How Are Crowns Made and Fitted?

Prior to preparing the crowns, our dentists reduce the outer surface of your teeth or tooth so that the crown fits perfectly. During this step, any additional changes that need to be made are also carried out. Following this, your existing tooth or teeth are used as a model for designing the crowns. There are five different types of materials that can be used to make crowns, and all are colored to match your teeth.

The crowns are a replica of the teeth that need to be protected, strengthened, or improved. Preparing and producing the crown takes approximately two weeks. While the crown is being produced, a temporary crown is used in its place. Once the crown is ready, it is checked to see if it fits. If it does, then the crown is cemented into place.

Different Types of Crowns

There are five varieties of dental crowns that may be used, depending on the purpose of the crown. The factors that our dentist will take into consideration before placing the crown include the size and location where the crown will fit, the teeth visible when you smile, and which material best matches your teeth to look as close to natural as possible.

Metal Crown

One option is a metal crown or metal alloy crown. These crowns can be made from any metal (especially gold and platinum) or alloys such as nickel-chromium alloys. These crowns have the best ability to withstand biting force and are highly resistant to corrosion. However, a metal crown cannot be colored to match your teeth.

Ceramic Crown

Another choice is a ceramic crown. These crowns are the closest in terms of feel and look to natural teeth. Individuals with metal allergies are highly recommended to get ceramic crowns. A third option is the porcelain-fused-to-metal crown. Unlike traditional metal crowns, this variety can be colored to match your teeth. They are stronger than conventional crowns made purely from porcelain. However, the crown is easily susceptible to damage and may chip or break easily with force.

Resin Crown

Resin crowns are also an option. Resin crowns are inexpensive but highly prone to damage. They easily fracture under pressure. Therefore, a lot of care is needed when maintaining resin crowns. Last but not least, we have stainless steel crowns. These are used as a temporary fix before your permanent crowns are ready.

Choosing the right type of crown can be overwhelming, which is why we offer extensive consultation to make the process easier and allow you to make better-informed decisions.
