Reasons for Tooth Extractions

Permanent teeth are designed to last a lifetime, but they can require extraction if they become badly damaged beyond repair. Below are some of the things that can cause this kind of damage:

•	Oral trauma. An injury to the mouth can cause damage to your teeth through fractures, chips, or completely knocking out the tooth. If the damage cannot be repaired, extraction is the next best option, which can then be followed by teeth replacement options such as dental implants.
•	Tooth decay. Tooth decay is easily treatable if it is discovered early enough. However, advanced tooth decay that has spread to the pulp and completely damaged it or even spread the jawbone might be beyond saving.

In addition to tooth damage, there are other reasons why tooth extractions might be necessary. These include:

•	When you have overcrowded teeth. Some orthodontic treatments used in treating crowded teeth might require the removal of some teeth to create enough space on the jawbone.
•	When you have impacted teeth. If you have impacted wisdom or canine teeth, treatment options might include their extraction.
•	When you have advanced periodontal disease. The periodontal disease can weaken the gum tissues and the jawbone, causing your teeth to become loose. In such a situation, extraction might be the only solution.
•	To prevent the occurrence of serious health issues. While minor tooth infections can be properly treated, it is possible for them to become fatal when your immune system is compromised, for example, during chemotherapy or when you are undergoing an organ transplant procedure. What to Expect During a Tooth Extraction Procedure?

A tooth extraction procedure can either be simple or surgical – depending on your situation. During a simple procedure, the tooth/teeth to be removed are loosed using various dental tools and then pulled out. However, for more complicated issues, for example, impacted teeth, surgery is used to expose the teeth for easier removal.

Both procedures are carried out under local anesthesia, although general anesthesia might be used for impacted teeth, or when you have several teeth being removed. The extraction procedure is carried out in a single dental appointment, but the length varies depending on the situation – a few minutes for simple extractions or longer for more complex extractions.

Recovering After Tooth Extraction

After the extraction procedure, you can expect some bleeding, pain, swelling, redness, and irritation of the extraction site, and other minor surgical side effects if surgery is involved. However, these side effects start to disappear as the extraction site starts healing.

To ensure fast and full recovery, you should keep the mouth clean through regular brushing and rinse (at least three times a day). However, while brushing, you should be gentle with the extraction site to prevent further irritation, which can cause bleeding to resume.

During the recovery period, you should also avoid sticky foods or any other foods that can stick on to the extraction site. Extremely hot foods and drinks can also irritate the extraction site, causing pain and discomfort. Lastly, you should avoid drinking alcohol (for at least 24 hours) and smoking until full recovery, as these habits can interfere with the healing process.
