Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Newport Beach, CA

Woman touching jaw in discomfortA full set of human teeth is usually completed with the growth of wisdom teeth. Although, you may have heard of people having their wisdom teeth removed, or you may even be required to have yours removed. While this may puzzle you, it is a fairly common procedure and often necessary for improved dental hygiene. At Enamel General and Cosmetic Dentistry, our professionals perform wisdom teeth extraction to prevent oral health issues, while improving their dental health.

What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars that erupt to complete our dentition. They appear sometimes between the ages of 17 and 25 for most people, and are situated at the far back of the mouth. While they come in at both sides of the upper and lower teeth, they may come in at different times, and for some, they may not come in at all.

Why Do We Remove Wisdom Teeth?

Being the last set of molars to appear, they usually come in when the jawbone is already formed and adjusted to the number of teeth already there. For some people, wisdom teeth eruption may not be a problem, but for many others, the jawbone may not be able to accommodate a new set of teeth. This becomes a problem, as the wisdom teeth may grow sideways or become impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth means that the wisdom teeth are growing but cannot emerge from the gums.

When these situations happen, they cause serious threats to our dental health. Wisdom teeth that grow sideways may push against other teeth, forcing them out of alignment and affecting our bite. Impacted wisdom teeth can also decay from bacterial attacks and cause severe pain and disease to the gums.

Signs That May Prompt Wisdom Teeth Removal

Overcrowding may occur in the mouth of a patient. Here, the teeth are pushed against each other as the wisdom teeth try to erupt. This is usually a painful experience and can lead to infections. Impacted wisdom teeth may also cause pain, bring infection to the gums, cause bad breath, and headaches or pain in the jaw.

What Is Wisdom Teeth Removal?

This is an extraction procedure for removing one or more wisdom teeth. Our professionals start out by examining your mouth and teeth with an x-ray. This x-ray helps to show the positions of your wisdom teeth and how impacted they may be. We will prepare you for the procedure by giving you the necessary sedation. The sedation is meant to keep you comfortable during the extraction.

Our professionals will numb the site and proceed to remove the wisdom tooth. We may need to make small cuts in your gum tissues to ease the removal of the tooth. Sometimes, the tooth may also be cut to ease the extraction. Once the tooth is removed, any cuts will be sealed and your sedation will be stopped. A gauze will be provided for you to bite against the area. This helps the blood to clot and starts the healing process.

Recovery should take a couple of weeks, but you will have to stay away from rinsing your mouth, or eating solid or hot meals in the first 24 hours. Wisdom teeth removal is a very common procedure, so speak to our professionals at Enamel General and Cosmetic Dentistry today, by calling us at 949-991-2499 to have all of your questions answered.
