Should You Rinse Your Mouth Out After Brushing?

Posted on 4/11/2022 by Joseph Kabaklian DDS
Should You Rinse Your Mouth Out After Brushing? To make sure your toothpaste does its job and protects you from cavities, it is vital to brush every surface of every tooth. But even after brushing, know that bits of plaque and food particles can still be lurking in hard-to-reach places in between your teeth and along the gum line. To remove these bits effectively, many people choose to rinse their mouths out with mouthwash or water after brushing, but for most people, there is no clear answer as to whether this practice actually helps or harms their oral health. Let us look at why your dentist may be insisting on rinsing your mouth after brushing.

Why Is It Important to Brush Your Teeth?

Brush, brush, brush! It is a simple rule to remember when it comes to keeping your mouth healthy and free of cavities. While it may seem like all you need is a few applications of toothpaste and a healthy dose of flossing, there is actually an order to how you should clean your teeth each day to help keep your smile in shape: Number one is, before brushing, rinse out any lingering foods or particles with some warm water. Secondly, brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, and thirdly, rinse your mouth thoroughly.

What Happens If I Fail to Rinse My Mouth Well?

By rinsing out your mouth, no matter what brand of toothpaste you use, you are preventing plaque from accumulating on your teeth. Sometimes bacteria and food particles can get stuck to your teeth after brushing them. If you do not rinse well enough, that can lead to bad breath or even gum disease. So it is best to rinse your mouth out after brushing, especially if there is something stuck on your teeth. This way, bacteria will not have a chance to grow and flourish on your teeth during times when saliva is not around.
