Dangers of Chewing on a Pencil or Pen Cap

Posted on 2/7/2022 by Joseph Kabaklian DDS
Dangers of Chewing on a Pencil or Pen CapPeople tend to chew on pencil or pen caps when in a meeting or attending a class. Even though this is an addictive habit that is believed to stimulate thinking, it can cause significant damage to your teeth. Chewing on hard items like pen and pencil caps will damage your teeth and increase the risk of developing infections. This is because these items have lots of bacteria that could find their way into your body and cause damage.

Effects of Chewing on Pen Caps

It is not a good idea to chew on pen caps. No matter how bored or idle you are, you should think of chewing on pen caps! The first risk it poses is choking because you can accidentally swallow the pen caps. Besides, these pen caps have sharp edges that are likely to cause infections in your mouth. When you repeatedly chew on pen caps and other hard items, you wear down your teeth. You also increase the risk of misalignment, depending on the movement of your jaw. The act of biting aggressively into the pen cap could negatively impact your jawbone, causing pain in that area.

It is also not hygienic to put random things like pen caps into your mouth. It could have touched the dirty floor and contains harmful bacteria. Therefore, putting such items in your mouth could result in extreme consequences. Apart from the risk of oral infections, you could develop conditions like bad stomachaches. This will significantly affect your well-being. Therefore, you should be careful with how you manage pen caps. Find a way of avoiding the chewing habit. Luckily, there are several ways you can do so. For instance, you can use a metallic pen that is impossible to chew on. Contact us for more information on the effects of chewing on pen caps.
