Gum Pain: How to Treat Inflamed Gums

Having inflamed gums can be a very worrisome sign that not all is going great in your mouth. When gums are swollen, sometimes thy bleed and if infected can have oozing puss. Additionally, inflamed gums tend to be very painful can cause people severe discomfort. So, what causes inflamed gums and how can it be treated?

What causes swollen gums?

One of the most common causes of swollen gums is gingivitis. This gum disease causes the gums to swell and become heavily irritated. While this condition is usually quite mild, if not treated can escalate to a condition known as periodontis where tooth loss is very much likely. Gingivitis is usually a result of having poor oral hygiene practices which allows for plaque to gain a foothold on your teeth. This film of bacteria then becomes tartar which cannot be eliminated by simple brushing and flossing. So how do you treat inflamed gums?

Salt water rinses

Salt water has been used to treat wounds for many years now. In this case, it is a very effective remedy against inflamed gums. The brine solution helps dry out the wound, healing and to stop bacteria from growing. By simply adding salt to some warm water, dissolving it and swishing it around your moth twice or thrice a day can be very helpful.

Over-the-Counter painkillers

We mostly advice patients to stay away from pain pills unless absolutely necessary. If the pain from the swollen gums gets to be too much, you can try some over the counter medication such as acetaminophen, aspirin or ibuprofen which are readily available at any drug store.

Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is yet another very effective solution to treating gum pain caused by inflammation. Additionally, it's lethal to bacteria which can aid in your dental health. To make a winning solution, mix equal parts of both the compound and water. Swish the mixture in your mouth for about 30 seconds and then spit. After that, you can rinse off the taste with some warm water.
