Are Clear Braces Better Other Than Being Difficult to See?

Posted on 1/24/2022 by Joseph Kabaklian DDS
Are Clear Braces Better Other Than Being Difficult to See?Conventional braces feature metal brackets, wires, and elastic bands that are placed on the front surfaces of the teeth. They are typically worn by children and teenagers in order to straighten teeth and address other orthodontic concerns early enough to prevent more serious problems from occurring at a later age. However, adults can benefit from braces too, and the proliferation of clear braces and aligners available today means that adults have more discreet options for improving their smile.

Types of Clear Braces

There are several types of clear or “invisible” braces and aligners available today. Ceramic bracket braces are similar to conventional braces, except the brackets are made from ceramic instead of metal. Ceramic is not as strong as metal, meaning that patients who opt for this type of braces might have to wear them for a longer period than they would with metal braces. However, the ceramic matches the shade of your teeth, meaning that they are much less noticeable than traditional braces.

Another alternative that adults might be interested in are lingual or “inside” braces, which are attached to the back of the teeth rather than the front. These have the same components as conventional braces and most of the same benefits, but are largely invisible since they are hidden behind the teeth, making them a good choice for people who might be self-conscious about having metal or ceramic brackets on the front of their teeth.

The option that is becoming increasingly popular for adults and older teenagers are clear, “invisible” aligners such as Invisalign. These are removable, custom aligners made of plastic that straighten your teeth over time without the metal components of traditional braces.

Benefits Other Than Appearance

In addition to being less noticeable, clear braces have some other benefits over traditional braces. Many patients find ceramic bracket braces more comfortable than traditional metal braces. For clear aligners, the ability to remove them for eating and cleaning is an advantage for some people. Finally, the cost of both ceramic braces and invisible aligners is often the same or only slightly more expensive than traditional braces. Contact our office to learn more about clear braces.
