Dental fillings are applied to restore the structures of teeth affected by trauma or decay. Dental fillings are offered in various forms, and every type has unique benefits and drawbacks.

Amalgam Fillings

Silver fillings, also called amalgam fillings, have been used in dentistry for over a century. These include metallic elements such as copper, tin, gold, and silver. Mercury has also been used and may still be in some of your older fillings.

Combination Fillings

Composite fillings, or white or tooth-colored ones, contain a mix of tiny glass particles and plastic resins. They are aesthetically pleasing because they can almost replicate the natural tooth color.

Ceramic Filling Materials

Ceramic and porcelain fillings contain material combined with ceramics or something similar. They are processed in a lab and then cemented inside the tooth. Ceramic fillings have high strength and resistance to stains. They are also colored to look like your natural tooth enamel.

Glass Ionomer Interstitials

Fillings made of glass ionomer are often employed to repair minor cavities in teeth, including infant teeth or root surfaces, that have been subjected to minimal to medium chewing tension. They may wear out more quickly and are less substantial than ceramic or composite fillings.

Gold Fillings

Gold fillings, sometimes called gold inlays or onlays, are crafted to order in a dental center using gold alloy. Gold fillings are solid, biocompatible, and long-lasting.

Temporary Fillings

Usually, a soft substance like composite resin or zinc oxide-eugenol is used for temporary fillings. They can be employed as a stopgap measure to save the tooth until a long-term filling is prepared, or they are used to fill cavities that will eventually be temporarily repaired.
