Gingivitis

Posted on 3/20/2023 by Joseph Kabaklian DDS
GingivitisGingivitis is a mild form of gum disease before it progresses to its severe form called periodontal disease. Whether or not it is mild, any form of gum disease is serious and should get immediate medical attention to prevent it from becoming severe and causing you complex dental conditions. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to the loss of multiple teeth which would become sophisticated to treat using dental implants. Gingivitis can also lead to the shrinking of your gum and jaw tissue which can make it problematic to receive dental implants. It is therefore paramount that you speak to one of our dental specialists to devise ways of correcting and preventing gingivitis from spreading even further.

What Causes Gingivitis

Gingivitis is mainly caused by poor oral hygiene which leads to the accumulation of dental plaque on your teeth and gum surfaces. When the plaque is left to rest for long, it becomes tartar, and this leads to bacterial infections which cause gingivitis or gum disease. The gum disease can spread to other areas of your oral cavity such as the root of your teeth.

Symptoms

Bleeding gums are usually the first sign that you have gum disease. This is mainly due to the bacterial infection affecting your gum tissue. Inflammation can also occur meaning that you will feel some pain or irritation in your gums while eating or brushing. You will also experience bad breath which comes from the bacteria in your mouth.
