Heart disease and oral health

Posted on 12/5/2022 by Joseph Kabaklian DDS
Heart disease and oral healthHeart disease is a condition that affects the heart. However, there is a relationship between heart disease and oral health. First, if one has a more advanced gum disease or is at a severe stage such as gingivitis then he/she is more likely to get heart disease. Second, one's oral health guides doctors in checking for signs of other diseases which might include those involving the heart.

The spread of germs and bacteria from the mouth to other body parts through the bloodstream leads to a connection between heart disease and oral health. On reaching the heart the bacteria attach to the already damaged tissues leading to the formation of a C-reactive protein which then causes inflammation in the blood vessels. This affects the inner part of the heart leading to a disease known as endocarditis. Other diseases such as stroke and clogged arteries (atherosclerosis) have emerged due to this relationship.

Signs and symptoms

Some of the symptoms can include bleeding of gums while brushing or eating, the presence of pus around the gums, sores or swollen gums which tends to be red, frequent bad breath or a bad mouth taste, and/or loose teeth are all warning signs that one might have gum disease. This should be attended to as soon as possible before advancing to severe cases which might lead to heart disease.

Treatment

Dental follow-ups and maintaining proper oral hygiene can help in protecting yourself from being affected by gum disease. This can be prevented by your brushing your teeth at least twice a day, using a well-sized toothbrush with fluoridated toothpaste, and flossing daily. Being attentive to your dental health by observing all the preventive measures can protect you from developing heart diseases that relate to oral health.
